Tackling homelessness and turning lives around

Housing in Coventry that provides supported temporary accommodation for single homeless people with complex needs, like mental health issues and addictions, is helping residents achieve positive results.

The Council provides accommodation which is helping people break the cycle of living in unsettled accommodation providing extra staffing to help service users with regular supervision and maintenances checks.

Properties like the one at Holyhead Road provides a much more supportive environment for people as well as providing significant financial savings for the council when compared to alternative provision.

During the pandemic more than 300 homeless people who were moved into emergency shelter have since been moved into more suitable accommodation including flats, house shares and live-in support schemes.

Coventry City Council has recently purchased and refurbished a number of properties to use as temporary accommodation including the property on Holyhead Road which is housing up to 26 single homeless people.

The homes help people to regain some control over their lives and has resulted in a better experience for tenants in the accommodation.

The people using the service have all experienced homelessness including sleeping rough and many have additional support needs. This means that every service user is different, and the support provided aims to achieve long term solutions that hopefully breaks the cycle of homelessness.

Cllr David Welsh, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “As a community we all understand the importance of having a roof over our head and I am really pleased for the positive work achieved by the Council and other agencies. It’s absolutely vital that we secure properties to house homeless people who could otherwise be in unsuitable and expensive accommodation such as hotels or bed and breakfast – or sleeping rough.

“The staff provide a range of excellent support for service users and I know that agencies are working very well together. They are very committed and caring and really want to make a difference for the wellbeing of services users.

“The key element is to have the right support in place for those people using the temporary accommodation.

“It’s about making a positive impact on peoples’ lives. It’s more cost-effective too.”

Supported Temporary Accommodation has housing officers onsite 07:30am-8pm, alongside commissioned housing related support from P3 to provide support in dealing with any issues that make securing permanent accommodation more difficult.

CCTV coverage, and a security/concierge service is also onsite out of hours and weekends to respond to any issues that may crop up; alongside regular supervision and maintenance checks.

The provision of supported accommodation is part of the Council’s Housing and Homelessness Strategy and the purchasing of properties was approved by the council in March 2020.
