Coventry’s year as City of Culture is finally here

The Leader of Coventry City Council has hailed the launch of Coventry’s year as UK City of Culture as ‘the fresh start that the city and country needs’.

The year officially begins tomorrow (15 May), and thousands of tickets are now on sale for a range of exciting events over the coming months.

Details of the opening day are being kept as a surprise by the City of Culture Team, but they have confirmed a film will be released bringing together the city’s celebrated author George Eliot and one of the hottest current music stars, producer Coolie.

The Show Windows project has also started this week, with a series of new window displays in the city centre; along with In Paint We Trust, where new artworks will be appearing in unique spaces across the city centre.

They will be followed by a massive range of events at venues around the city, in parks and green spaces and online.

Cllr George Duggins, Leader of Coventry City Council, said: “It is wonderful that the year we have waited for so long is here at last and our city can begin its reign as UK City of Culture.

“It has been a very difficult past year and the team and all our venues, performers and organisations have done an amazing job to prepare and plan a year-long programme that will celebrate our story and our culture.

“Our city centre has also undergone massive improvements as we prepare to greet our visitors when restrictions allow, and it is such an exciting time of change and opportunity for the city.

“The pandemic and all the troubles it has brought has made this year more important than ever. It is now our chance to give the fresh start that the city and country needs, and welcome people back out into the community and to some breath-taking events.

“This is Coventry’s year, and I would urge everyone to be a part of it, to enjoy it and to see just what our city can do. It is a year when we share our history and celebrate the city we are today, but it is also a year that will help us build the Coventry of tomorrow and create something special for all who live here.”

Full details of events and how to watch are on the Coventry 2021 website, and its Facebook and twitter pages.

A major launch event is being planned for 5 June, when a day-long celebration called Coventry Moves will tell the story of Coventry’s pioneering identity and how it continues to shape its future and give voice to the many people that call the city their home.

All events are being planned in a flexible and responsive way, to allow them to be presented throughout 2021-22 in line with the guidelines at the time they take place.

Collars are to be fitted to 78 head of cattle for their annual grazing period at Sutton Park in a new virtual fencing solution that helps better manage the land and the animals living on it.
