In an attempt to help encourage the UK towards a much more environmentally-friendly car ownership. Motorists are being handed £3,000 worth of alternative travel arrangements for their old polluting cars.
This is the first scheme of its kind to take place in the UK.
The car is scraped, used for recycling and then the motorist will be offered the £3,000 in credits to cover the cost of other alternative transport such as: buses, trains, car hire and taxis over the span of two years.
The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA)’s TfWM section believes that this will help persuade owners of the cars to use more environmentally friendly transport. The aim of this? To help provide a less traffic congestive environment with clear air quality.
Mayor Andy Street of the West Midlands has told people that, “The West Midlands is facing a climate emergency, and tackling that means reducing air pollution and finding ways to encourage people to cut out unnecessary private car journeys in favour of public transport or active travel such as cycling and walking.”
The current trial is being funded by the Future Mobility Zone with a grant given to the region by the Department for Transport of £22 Million.
