City Council joins forces with equality charity

share close

Coventry City Council has signed up with equality group Stonewall to become a Diversity Champion. They work worldwide to promote equality and ensure that laws and rights essential for LGBT+ equality are created, maintained, protected and defended.

Also, it helps organisations make sure that LGBT+ people, across all communities, are valued and welcomed by all.

Councillor Abdul Salam Khan, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Equalities said: “We are delighted to announce that we have signed up to become a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

“In recent months we have strengthened our employee networks that support not just the LGBT+ community, but those from Black and Asian Minority Ethnic communities, colleagues with disabilities and others, to feel supported and to give them a voice.”

The charity works with over 850 organisations, creating inclusive and accepting environments for almost a quarter of the UK workforce.

It helps keep companies and organisations up to date with legal changes and implications, build support networks, and help recruitment and staff retention.

Cllr Khan added, “We look forward to working with Stonewall, our colleagues and Trade Unions to continue that work and build a diverse and inclusive Council that reflects our city and inspires others.”
