Coventry remains the top-ranked city in the West Midlands for full-fibre coverage and has moved up from 8th to 5th out of 379 locations in the UK on the average full-fibre range for broadband speeds and internet connectivity.

The latest Ofcom report, produced in December, titled “Connected Nations Update” measures the progress being made across the country in delivering a high-quality internet connection to properties and businesses.

Cllr Richard Brown, Cabinet Member for Strategic Finance and Resources, said: “The city is strengthening its internet connectivity at a time when there is a greater reliance on home working due to the current pandemic.

“It seems that Coventry is the place to head to for the best internet connections, and that’s good for business and the economy.”

Alongside full-fibre, which is currently the fastest and most reliable internet connectivity available, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps, the report also measures access to superfast connections (download speeds of over 30Mbps) and ultrafast connections (download speeds of around 300Mbps). When looking at Coventry’s score for combined connectivity across superfast, ultrafast, and full-fibre, the city is ranked 4th in the country.

The UK average coverage for full-fibre is 18 per cent, and Coventry has 67.2 per cent coverage – up from 54.7 per cent in the summer. Also, Ofcom stated that Coventry is the 4th most improved for internet accessibility in 2020.

Paul Ward, Head of ICT and Digital Services, said: “With a number of our partner organisations, we are developing an exciting and innovative city-wide approach to digital infrastructure, technology, and services for our residents and businesses. Fibre connectivity is a vital component to that, so we are pleased that Coventry continues to push hard in the delivery of this critical infrastructure.“
